Der Film spielt an einem ganz normalen Tag in Ugandas Hauptstadt Kampala und der Provinz Gulu. Für drei Menschen ist dieser Tag jedoch ein besonderer. (...) Die Wege der drei Protagonisten kreuzen sich nicht, aber ihnen allen verlangt dieser eine Tag eine ungewöhnliche Stärke ab. Unterschwellig erzählt der Film jedoch zugleich davon, wie man sich im heutigen Uganda eben diese Stärke wie eine zweite Haut zulegen muss, um im Alltag überleben zu können.
Dank seiner überzeugenden Darsteller, einem Gespür für die visuelle Darstellung von Klassengegensätzen, dank unbekannter, urbaner Drehorte und einer eigenwilligen, narrativen Musikebene darf Imani als eine herausragende Produktion des jungen afrikanischen Kinos angesehen werden. How would you describe the aesthetics of your film?
It is a fresh looking film that reveals Uganda in a way never seen before. Influenced by european and west african world cinema it has an impressionistic aesthetic.

Why did you choose to shoot on a digital format (was it solely for financial reasons, or did aesthetics play a role)?
I wanted to shoot on a format that had all the qualities of celluloid that I could cut on my computer and is forward thinking.

Which format exactly did you choose (MiniDV, DVCAM, HDV, HD...), and why?
RED CAMERA Redcode, the camera is small enough to shoot intimate shots with my non actors in sometimes dangerous location but the image has so much details and is slick. It is the first time that RED has been used in Uganda.

What was special about shooting with Red (e.g. compared to 35-mm or
other digital formats)? Was it your first time with Red / digital or are
you used to it?
The resolution is second to none.

What was your shoot-edit ratio?
Huge
